Question: Do I need a lawyer in Georgia to help with alimony and child support?
I was divorced in Georgia and I moved to California for a job. When we divorced my wife stayed in Georgia with our two kids. Her family lives in Atlanta and she and the kids live in Alpharetta.
I'm not making the kind of money I used to because I work for a company that provides services to oil and gas companies. Now that oil and gas prices have declined substantially, my company is making less profits and my pay has been cut. I could get laid-off any day now.
When things were good I put my Georgia Tech degree to work as an engineer and money was no object. I divorced my wife and re-married and moved to Southern California. I did develop a gambling problem and spent too much time in Las Vegas and betting on sports online.
I pretty much agreed to whatever she wanted. Now I'm stuck with a big alimony payment every month and child support that I can no longer afford. I'm behind on both payments.
I need to pay less alimony and child support. I need to save money because my new wife wants a divorce. So things are complicated.
Do I need a lawyer in Georgia? Or can I just handle these issues where I live?

Answer: If you wish to have your child support and alimony modified, you need will a lawyer here in Georgia. In fact, you will need to bring an action in the Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta. That's because your former wife lives in Fulton County and you need to request any modification in the county where your ex-wife resides.
We handle many cases for clients who live outside of the state of Georgia. Again, you cannot get the relief that you want in California because a court there does not have jurisdiction; you need to bring the action here in Fulton County.
